A few years ago, a woman called me with an unusual request. Her husband had just passed away, and she wanted me to create a painting for her that would keep him close to her heart. 

Over 50 years ago, her husband had proposed to her in the middle of an aspen grove. 

She asked if I could carve their initials into one of the aspen trunks inside a tiny heart...

“I have an unusual request,” she told me. “I know you can paint aspens, but by any chance, can you also paint birds?” she asked. 

And then she told me the story of the red cardinal. 

I’d never known this before!

A cardinal is a representative of a loved one who has passed. It means they are visiting you. They usually show up when you most need them or miss them. They also make an appearance during times of celebration as well as despair to let you know they will always be with you. 

I told her it would be an honor to do this painting for her.
